11 May Bishop Lyons Shield
At the beginning of May, ten girls represented Villa at the annual Bishop Lyons’ Shield Competition – an oratorical battle between seven Canterbury Catholic Colleges. Each year a different school hosts the event; the 2015 competition was hosted by St Bede’s.
We are delighted to report that our debating team won their competition after a wonderful final debate against St Bede’s. Congratulations to the team including: Samantha Crews, Isabella Walsh and Olivia Nally.
The weekend started off with the Impromptu Speech by Amelia DeMarco who came away with a very close second place; missing out on 1st by just one point. Julia Curnow, our Junior speaker, spoke about the next generation and captivated the audience with her spectacular performance and came away with a 4th placing. Mary Lyons, our senior speaker, spoke about our moral conscience and was certainly one of the favourites in the crowd due to her fantastic and captivating delivery. Berith Petaia spoke beautifully on Sunday morning in the Scripture Reading gaining us a well-earned 4th place.
The last event of the competition was the Religious Questions; our team consisting of Laura Hamilton, Stephanie Watson and Sherry Malik did an exceptional job considering the questions were unexpectedly different to previous years. The girls took it in their stride and handled this turn of events with their heads held high and gave it their all, coming away with a 3rd place overall. Marian College coming away with the Bishop Lyons’ Shield for 2015.
