Sporting Achievements

Each year Villa Maria College celebrates numerous South Island, National and International sporting successes attained by students and College teams.

Each year, the College recognises the top sporting achievers through the College Sports Awards which are held in October of each year. View the most recent results here.

The College has nurtured many NZ sporting stars, including Commonwealth Games swimming star of the 1970's Jaynie Hudgell (nee Parkhouse) and Silver Ferns Bernice Mene and Anna Galvan (nee Veronese). For more information about our Graduate sports achievers click here.

ZONTA SPORTS AWARDS

Zonta International is a global organisation of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy, who strive to provide service globally and locally.

The Zonta Sports Awards were established in 1990 and celebrate the sporting successes of young men and women at secondary schools throughout Canterbury and the West Coast.

Awards are made in seven categories and judged by a panel of five eminent sportspeople. The winners are announced in late October at a prestigious dinner. Some previous Zonta Sports Awards winners are already world champions. Many have represented New Zealand in their sporting codes.

2008 Senior A Netball team

2009 Category Five - Most Outstanding Team of Young Sports Women.
The criteria period for these Awards is 1 Sept 08 to 31 Aug 09, so this win incorporated the team's outstanding wins at the South Island Secondary Schools' Champs in 2008 and winning the coveted New Zealand Secondary Schools' title.

Katie Rasmussen (Year 12) 2009 Category Two - Contribution to Sports Administration by a Young Woman in a position of umpire, referee, coach or tutor. In 2009 Katie coached a netball team and gained her Centre badge for Christchurch Netball so as well as her team umpiring commitments, she also umpired additional games every Saturday and on Fridays often reffed up to 3 games of basketball in the College gymnasium. This is a fitting award for her commitment to sport at Villa.
