Villa Maria College Netball has a lengthy and proud history. Some
famous former "Villa Girls" who have achieved top NZ netball
representation and Silver Ferns honours include:
Pauline Knaggs (nee Flynn 1970-1973)
Bernice Nash (nee Mene 1988-1992)
Anna Galvan (nee Veronese 1992-1996)
Huge Success
One
of the highlights for Villa was our winning 2008 Senior A team who made
netball history becaming the first ever Christchurch team, and second
only South Island team to win the NZ Secondary Schools' championship
title. This was a major achievement for the team made up of the
following players:

This
was an outstanding season, with the team placed second in the Wednesday
Supernet competition, playing in the highest grade (Premier) in the
Christchurch Netball Centre Saturday competition and also winning the
2008 South Island Secondary Schools' Netball title.
Three members
of this team went on to the 2010 Mecury Energy Tactix Team playing in
the ANZ Trans-Tasman Championships: Ellen Halpenny, Hannah Poff, Joanna
Trip. Other past pupils include Tactix coach Helen Mahon-Stroud and
Tactix player Anna Galvan.
2010 A Netball Team
The
2010 A Netball Team is playing in senior grade in the Saturday
Christchurch netball competition and the school sports Canterbury
Supernet competition. They will also be competiting at the South Island
Secondary Schools' Championships in Blenheim.

During
the 2010 July school holidays, Villa Year 9A and Year 10A teams played
in the South Island Secondary Schools' Junior Netball Tournament. The
Year 9 team placed 13th out of 32 teams with the Year 10 team
placing 5th out of 32 teams. Congratulations to Georgia Payne for being
named as one of 10 identified talented players and to Katie Rasmussen
(Year 12) for being named as one of five identified talented umpires.
The
VMC Netball Club Committee is a group of volunteer parents who work to
promote netball within the College. The committee oversees all trials,
selections of teams, coaching, umpiring and registration.

Registration
Takes
place early in Term 1 each year. All girls who register with VMC
Netball play in the Christchurch Netball Centre Competition. Games are
played each Saturday during the season, which runs from the start of
Term 2 through to the end of Term 3. In 2010 we have 23 teams
registered with Christchurch Netball.
Trials
These are held in the College gymnasium from late February. For specific
registration and trial dates, see the College's newsletter in February
or phone one of the committee members.

We are always looking for volunteers who can help by coaching or managing a team. Contact one of the committee for more details.
